Marc Jacobs, Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein…fashion’s biggest names are competing on NY catwalks to present their new collections during the famous biannual event.
Fashion week is celebrated in more than 40 cities around the world but it all began in New York...
During World War II, fashion insiders were unable to travel to Paris to preview French collections. For centuries, the world had looked only to France for the latest fashions, or for inspiration for its own designs, and the United States had always followed that trend.
This proved to be the catalyst behind the launch of the world's first fashion week. Originally called "Press Week", this stylish affair took place in 1943 in New York City. Organizer Eleanor Lamber hoped to detract attention from the French and to thrust American fashion into the spotlight, and she did.
Press Week was a huge success. The climate of fashion began to change and respected fashion publications like Vogue began featuring a variety of U.S. designers.
Today, there are four major fashion weeks that take place in the same order every year: New York, London, Milan, and Paris. Dubbed the "Big Four", this collective group holds two events a year – Fall/Winter in February and Spring/Summer in September. These shows provide a sneak peek at new collections and upcoming trends.
Some other important fashion weeks in the world are held in Tokyo, São Paulo, Los Angeles, Buenos Aires, and in Toronto.
You have until tomorrow to enjoy the NY runway shows and to take a look at the latest trends to know what's "in" and what's "out" for the next season!
